Show Docker Hub pulls in your Mac menu bar

Docker Hub’s public API reports total pulls and stars for every public repository. A Web Address meter turns it into a counter.

Recipe tested October 29, 2026 with Multimeter 1.1. Source: Web Address.

Preview: the LCD Readout face and two alternatives, with sample values like the ones this recipe returns.

What you need

  • Multimeter for macOS 13 or later, $19.99 once.
  • The image as NAMESPACE/REPO. Official images use the namespace library.

Set it up

  1. Check it in Terminal:
    Terminal
    curl -s https://hub.docker.com/v2/repositories/library/nginx | grep -o '"pull_count":[0-9]*'
  2. Add a Web Address meter with your image and the key path pull_count.
    Web address
    https://hub.docker.com/v2/repositories/NAMESPACE/REPO
  3. Refresh every hour.

Limits

  • Docker Hub limits anonymous API calls per address; an hourly meter is far below it.

Troubleshooting

SymptomCauseFix
No number found in the responseThe key path doesn’t match the reply.Run curl -s with the address and read the JSON. Dots walk into objects, numbers pick array items (items.0.count).
Couldn’t reach the addressNo network, a typo in the host, or the service is down.Open the address in your browser. Multimeter tries again at the next refresh.

Questions

Does this work for GitHub Container Registry?

No, ghcr.io doesn’t publish pull counts through an API. Docker Hub does.
