Show your Mac’s fan speed in the menu bar

Add a Fan Speed meter in Multimeter. It shows your fans’ speed in RPM, averaged across the fans your Mac has, updated every few seconds.

Multimeter’s built-in faces, running live on sample data.

What macOS shows on its own

macOS doesn’t show fan speed anywhere.

How Multimeter shows it

  • Read from the Mac’s System Management Controller: the average of up to four fans, in RPM.
  • Every 3 seconds on power, about every 6 on battery.
  • Read only. Multimeter never changes fan speeds.

Set it up

  1. Choose Add Meter… and pick Fan Speed.
  2. Needle Gauge makes a good tachometer.
  3. Set the range to your Mac’s fan range if you want the needle to mean the same thing every day.

Every face works with every source it lists. See all 13 faces running live.

Limits

Macs without a fan (MacBook Air) show “This Mac has no fan to read”. Fan speed needs the direct download version from multimeterapp.com, the one on sale now; the Mac App Store sandbox doesn’t allow reading the fans.

Questions

Can Multimeter control my fans?

No. It only reads fan speed. iStat Menus can control fans.
