Show your network speed in the menu bar

macOS has no built-in way to show live network speed in the menu bar. Add a Network meter in Multimeter, pick download or upload, and choose a face. Add two meters to see both directions.

Multimeter’s built-in faces, running live on sample data.

What macOS shows on its own

Activity Monitor’s Network tab shows data received and sent per second at the bottom of its window.

How Multimeter shows it

  • Bytes in or out per second across your Wi-Fi and Ethernet connections, sampled every 3 seconds on power and about every 6 on battery.
  • The range follows your recent peak, so the graph stays useful on both a slow café connection and gigabit at home. Set a fixed range if you prefer.
  • One meter per direction, labelled DOWN or UP by default.

Set it up

  1. Choose Add Meter… and pick Network.
  2. In Customize, choose Download or Upload.
  3. Pick Sparkline to see bursts over time, or LCD Readout for the number.

Every face works with every source it lists. See all 13 faces running live.

Limits

This is what your Mac is sending and receiving right now, not a speed test of your connection’s maximum.

Questions

Is this a speed test?

No. It shows current traffic. A speed test measures the most your connection can do; this shows what’s flowing at the moment.
