Show the temperature outside in your Mac menu bar

macOS can put the weather in Notification Center and, on recent versions, a widget on the desktop. Neither stays in the menu bar. A Web Address meter does, for the exact coordinates you choose, and the Thermometer face fills and changes color as it warms up.

Recipe tested October 29, 2026 with Multimeter 1.1. Source: Web Address.

Preview: the Thermometer face and two alternatives, with sample values like the ones this recipe returns.

What you need

  • Multimeter for macOS 13 or later, $19.99 once.
  • Your latitude and longitude.

Set it up

  1. Find your latitude and longitude. Open-Meteo’s place search gives them for any town (the first result’s latitude and longitude):
    Terminal
    curl -s 'https://geocoding-api.open-meteo.com/v1/search?name=Plano&count=1'
  2. Add a Web Address meter with your coordinates in this address, and the key path current.temperature_2m. Drop &temperature_unit=fahrenheit for Celsius.
    Web address
    https://api.open-meteo.com/v1/forecast?latitude=33.02&longitude=-96.70&current=temperature_2m&temperature_unit=fahrenheit
  3. Refresh every 15 minutes. Set the range to your local extremes (for example 10 to 110) and the unit to °F.

Limits

  • Open-Meteo allows up to 10,000 calls a day for non-commercial use without a key; one meter every 15 minutes uses 96. Its models update about every hour.
  • It’s a weather model for your coordinates, not a thermometer outside your window; it can differ from a nearby station by a degree or two.

Variations

Feels like, humidity, wind

Ask for more in current=, comma separated, and pick one per meter: apparent_temperature, relative_humidity_2m, wind_speed_10m (add &wind_speed_unit=mph), precipitation, cloud_cover.

Today’s high

Use &daily=temperature_2m_max&timezone=auto&forecast_days=1 and the key path daily.temperature_2m_max.0.

Questions

Can it show the weather icon or conditions?

Meters show numbers. current=weather_code gives a WMO code (0 clear, 61 rain, 71 snow) if you want an alert on rain or snow.

Does it use my location automatically?

No. You type your coordinates once, so nothing asks for location access.
